The geopolitics of energy are being overturned as the world transitions from the oil and gas supply relations that have dominated since the 1970s to the new dynamics of low-carbon energy.

The energy transition will take decades, but is already causing turmoil in global geopolitics as oil producers and consumers battle for control of the agenda; the US, China, Europe and others compete for position in the emerging new economy; and old relationships start to fray. The Ukraine war, Gaza crisis and broader shift toward a multipolar world are feeding into this upheaval, adding more turmoil.

What new trade flows are emerging? How fast will the low-carbon transition advance? Does China already have an unbeatable lead? Can Russia fend off Western sanctions? What role will critical minerals play? And what does all this change mean for the oil producers of the Middle East Gulf? Our speaker David Pike will address these questions and more as he maps out the fundamental changes that will redefine the world in the coming decades.

Recently moved to Vancouver Island from the mainland, David Pike is Editor-in-Chief and Head of Americas at Energy Intelligence, a leading international energy information company, which has delivered objective reporting, research and analysis on the energy sector for over 70 years. David began his career as a reporter in the Middle East in the late 1980s, before specializing in energy 30 years ago. As a reporter and editor, he has covered major global events from the Palestinian intifadah to wars in the Gulf and week-long Opec meetings. He has actively followed the low-carbon transition since leading the expansion of Energy Intelligence into renewable energy and carbon markets 12 years ago. His current role involves overseeing content across Energy Intelligence and managing its network of journalists and research analysts from Singapore to New York.

David previously worked for Argus Media and the Middle East Economic Digest. He holds a BA in politics and history from the University of Manchester and an MA in Middle East politics from the University of Exeter, both in the UK.
