National Zoom Event: NATO’s 75th Anniversary: Canada’s Role in the Alliance

Mar 18, 2024 06:00 PM (Saskatchewan time) / 8:00 PM Eastern

April 4, 2024, will mark 75 years of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ensuring the collective defence of its member countries through political and military means. This year’s anniversary is an auspicious milestone, given the increased profile in the news as Russian aggression expands to the west, the threats of cyberterrorism are ever-increasing, and the alliance is expanding its membership in response to global instability.

In recognition of this landmark, we invite you to join the President & CEO of the NATO Association of Canada, Mr. Robert Baines, LCol Matthew Johns and Professor Anessa L. Kimballus for an online roundtable and Q&A as we discuss NATO’s history, current challenges, and Canada’s contributions to the alliance.

This event is hosted by CIC-Saskatoon. Special thanks to the NATO Association of Canada (www.NATOassociation.ca ) for their support of this event.

Speakers include:

Mr. Robert Baines – is the President and CEO of the NATO Association of Canada, where he is focused on communicating the importance of NATO and the international-rules based order to Canadians. The Association is a charitable non-profit which hosts events across Canada, publishes hundreds of articles online every year and engages young Canadians about NATO through social media.

Dr. Anessa L. Kimball – the author of “Beyond 2%: NATO Partners, Institutions & Burden Management”, is a professor of political science, director of the Centre for International Security (CSI) at the École supérieure d’études internationales at Université Laval as well as co-director of two themes for the Canadian Defense and Security Network (CDSN)-Security; Climate security & NATO. For over two decades, Dr. Kimball has used quantitative methods and rational institutionalist approaches to examine the institutional design of defense and security cooperation arrangements and defense burden sharing.

LCol Matthew Johns – Ex-Commander – Leadership Development Training Element, Operation UNIFIER in Latvia – LCol Johns recently returned from Latvia where, as the Course Director on Roto 0, he stood up the new Leadership Development Training Element under the Op UNIFIER umbrella. The LDTE instructs Ukrainian officers on Brigade-level tactics and manoeuvres. While there, LCol Johns travelled to the Security Assistance Group – Ukraine in Germany (including briefing them on the courseware and obtaining NATO standardization approvals) and Poland to coordinate with the LITPOLUKR multinational brigade. He also briefed the Latvian National Defence Academy on the way forward for training and doctrine related to Canadian and international support for the war in Ukraine.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
