In his wide-ranging talk, Dr. John Price will trace the historical relationship between anti-Asian racism and Canadian foreign policy by focusing attention on several critical moments in the history of Pacific Canada from the anti-Asian Vancouver Race Riots and Immigration Laws between 1907 and 1910, World War II and Canada in Asia to Canada’s recognition of China in 1970-71. As John will discuss, there are many shocking revelations about Canada’s historical view of Asia including its past racist immigration policies, both provincial and federal, that both provoke and unsettle while also providing context for Canada’s current foreign policy approaches in the Asia-Pacific.
