Who would have thought that a tiny insect – the aster leafhopper (Macrosteles quadrilineatus) – in the Gulf Coast states of the US could cross borders and wreak havoc on vegetable and field crops in Canada. Join us and hear a riveting story of weather systems, international cooperation and dogged research that has gone into solving the riddle of the 2012 outbreak.

About our speaker:

Dr. Tyler Wist is a Research Scientist in Field Crop Entomology, based at the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Although he specializes in wheat insect pests like wheat midge and cereal aphids, Dr. Wist still continues to work on new pests in new crops (canaryseed and quinoa), the worst insect pests in canola like flea beetles, insect vectored pathogens such as aster yellows and pea aphids in pulse crops. Ask him about beneficial insects too…he loves to discuss how predators and parasitoids devour pest insects.
