This month’s topic: Canada and the Artic
Canadians have long viewed the North as a fundamental part of the Canadian national consciousness. In recent years, the Arctic has been seen both as an asset and as an area of concern for Canada. Melting ice has the potential to unlock large mineral reserves, as well as to allow for greater accessibility to the region. More accessible sea routes and increased human activity in the Arctic have resulted in the increase of national interests by states that border the Arctic, including Canada. The rise in global interest in the region, as well as the dramatic effects of climate change on the region, are creating new challenges to occur in Canadian Arctic territory.
This week’s discussion will focus on what the changing Arctic environment means for Canada, international security and international cooperation.
This forum will be moderated by Olivia Compton. Come join the conversation!
