CIC Young Professionals Network: How Afghan Women are Defying the Taliban

September 29, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Free

The Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan has plunged the country into a humanitarian crisis, especially for Afghan women.  To help us understand the consequences of Taliban rule in Afghanistan and the human rights situation faced by Afghan women,  the CIC Young Professionals Networks is being joined by Robina Aryubwal and Lailuma Sadid. The discussion will include the opportunity for audience questions.

About the speakers:

Robina Aryubwal risked her life studying in secret and helping her parents lead a secret school in their home while living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.  She ultimately left Afghanistan with her family after they were targeted by a war lord.  Her remarkable journey from Afghanistan is detailed in the award winning book by CBC journalist Carol Off, All We Leave Behind.

Lailuma Sadid studied journalism at Kabul University and received a Master’s in Political Science from Université libre de Bruxelles.  She sought asylum in Belgium to flee from the death threats she was facing as a female journalist in Afghanistan and now works as a journalist with Brussels Morning.
