For eight years, Canadians and many others around the world have had the benefit of reading the insights of The Globe and Mail’s Asia Correspondent, Nathan VanderKlippe as he observed first-hand the dramatic societal, technological and geostrategic changes gripping China. Now, in this wonderful opportunity to hear from him directly, Nathan will discuss the changes that Chinese President Xi Jinping has introduced in China, and what they mean for the country, its immediate neighbours and globally. Indeed, his in-depth reporting from Xinjiang brought the plight of the Uyghurs and the forced labour camps that many are being held in, right into our homes as has his coverage of democracy protests in Hong Kong. Nathan has also won many journalism awards, most recently from World Press Freedom Canada for his reporting on China’s controversial practices in Xinjiang and the Norman Webster Award for International Reporting also for his coverage of events in Xinjiang.
Nathan VanderKlippe is the Asia correspondent for The Globe and Mail. Previously based in Beijing, and now Vancouver, his reporting has taken him across the region, where he covers political developments, social trends, international affairs, and refugee crises. He has spoken with political and business leaders, including Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte, and former president of Taiwan Ma Ying-jeou. He also served two terms on the board of the Foreign Correspondents Club of China. His reporting has been recognized by the National Newspaper Awards, National Magazine Awards, the Canadian Association of Journalists, Amnesty International, The Society of American Business Editors and Writers and The International China Journalists Association.
