CIC Victoria: The United Kingdom and Canada – Strengthening our strategic ties

October 19, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm PDT

When: Thursday, 19 October
Where: The Union Club, 805 Gordon Street
Time: 12:30-2 pm (doors open at noon)

Note: Doors open at noon, with lunch from 12:30 pm-1 pm, followed by a talk from the High Commissioner and a Q & A session until 2 pm.

Our speaker, High Commissioner Susannah Goshko is a career diplomatic service officer who took up her appointment as High Commissioner to Canada in September 2021. She was previously Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary, a role that she held for two years covering the COVID pandemic and the merger of the Foreign Office and the Department for International Development. She has spent much of her career working on national security issues and has had a number of postings in the Americas (twice in Washington and once in Havana). She has also spent time at the Department for Exiting the EU, where she was responsible for setting up the team that led on the Withdrawal Agreement and has been the UK’s Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN Habitat.

Her talk will span a range of issues including UK-Canada trade, investment, scientific and innovation relations and efforts leading toward an eventual free trade agreement with Canada post-Brexit. The war in Ukraine and the UK’s leading role from sanctions on Russia to military assistance for Ukraine will also be top of the agenda, especially since Canada has a sizable military contingent in the UK right now training the Ukrainian armed forces.

The cost to attend is $40 for CIC members, $45 for non-members, $30 for CIC young professional members and non-member students and $20 for CIC student members.

To register please email cic.victoria.sec@gmail.com no later than noon on Thursday, 12 October with your name, the names of any guests and any specific dietary restrictions. Along with confirmation of your attendance once we hear from you, eTransfer payment instructions will then be provided and payment by eTransfer is strongly encouraged. Unfortunately, as meals must be pre-ordered and paid for, no refunds are possible unless we have a waiting list.
