CIC Victoria: Strengthening Engagement: Taiwan-Canada relations
February 15 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm PST
CIC Victoria: In-person event
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu recently said that Taiwan was working hard to strengthen its self-defense capability and looking forward to expanding its cooperation with Canada in key areas such as education, supply chains and technology. In addition, he noted that the Taiwanese government welcomed Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and called for Canadian support for its bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Today, Taiwan is Canada’s 13th largest trading partner and 5th largest in Asia. To discuss Canada-Taiwan relations and the security situation in the Indo-Pacific region from Taiwan’s perspective, we are pleased to announce that Li-hsin (Angel) Liu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Vancouver will join us at our Union Club lunch. Ms. Liu assumed her post as Director General in October 2021. During her 23 years of foreign service for the Taiwan Foreign Ministry, she was posted twice in the United States, respectively in Houston, Texas from 2002-2008, and Los Angeles, California from 2012-2018. Prior to her current post, she worked in the Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister’s Office, Mainland Affairs Council, and the Department of North American Affairs and Department of East Asian & Pacific Affairs. She has a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University with a major in China Studies and international economics.
Doors open at 11:30 am. The cost to attend is $40 for CIC and Union Club members, $45 for non-members, $20 for CIC student members, and $30 for young professional and non-member students.
Special note: We are pleased to announce that for this event we will have a bar service available in the ballroom from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. The bar service will close precisely at 12:30 pm, so as not to distract when the speaker is presenting.
