CIC Victoria: Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: The Perspective from Europe

September 6, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm PDT

Registration details to come.

This is an in-person event at the Sticky Wicket Pub in downtown Victoria.

The war in Ukraine, and its implications, are being felt across the globe and especially in Eastern and Central Europe, where many countries are still struggling to look after millions of Ukrainian refugees, mainly women and children that began fleeing Ukraine, shortly after Russia invaded their country on 24 February this year. Indeed, how is the war between Ukraine and Russia affecting Ukraine’s neighbours, from the financial implications of looking after refugees to European sanctions on Russia and the resulting need to seek alternative energy supplies as winter approaches? To answer these questions and more, please join Oliver Schmidtke, who recently returned from a one-year sabbatical in Hamburg, Germany as he recounts his on-the-ground observations about the war and what might happen next?

Oliver Schmidtke is a Professor in Political Science and History at the University of Victoria. Since 2011, he has also served as the director of the Centre for Global Studies. Oliver received his PhD from the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence and has been a JF Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University, a visiting scholar at Humboldt University Berlin, a F. Braudel Senior Fellow at the EUI, and a Marie Curie Fellow at Hamburg University. From July 2021-July 2022, Oliver was on a sabbatical at the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study where as a fellow, he pursued field research related to populism and its effects on liberal democracies.
