What is the moral problem with killer robots? Who or what is given the “license to kill?” It might sound like science fiction but the use of autonomous weapons or killer robots on the battlefield, or in policing, is closer than you think. To prevent this from happening, civil society organization Mines Action Canada have created the Stop Killer Robots campaign. Stop Killer Robots has successfully brought the issue to the world stage and now the topic is being discussed by national governments and the UN. At the start of this event, the short film, “Immoral Code” will be shown and it explores why societies are developing technologically capable weapons that can autonomously select and engage targets. And while they might cause less risk to human operators but at what cost? Join us to watch the short film, “Immoral Code” by Stop Killer Robots and hear an expert panel discuss the implications of this digital dehumanization. A Q & A will follow. The panel will be chaired by Oliver Schmidtke, Director of the CFGS and includes Lucy Suchman, Professor Emerita of Anthropology of Science and Technology in the Department of Sociology at Lancaster University; Erin Hunt, Co-Director at Mines Action Canada; and Adel Guitouni, Professor at Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria. This is a free/no cost event. There is no need to register…just come on by!
