CIC Victoria: Fixing Canada’s Economy

When: Tuesday, 6 October 2026
Where: The Sticky Wicket Pub, Studio 919 (downstairs), the Strathcona Hotel, 919 Douglas Street
Time: 5 – 7:00 pm (doors open at 5 pm)
Speaker: Dr. Christopher Ragan
In this wide-ranging talk, Chris Ragan will address some of the many issues that pervade the current policy tensions between Canada and the US related to trade and tariffs. What is free trade really all about, and what is the problem with any country’s trade deficits or surpluses? What is the appeal of US tariffs for President Donald Trump, and how will these affect both economies? Is there something special about Canada that makes tariffs on our exports a bigger problem than tariffs on exports from other countries? What would a “Fortress North America” look like and is it a good idea? Finally, what are the prospects for Canada in diversifying its trade away from the US?
Dr. Chris Ragan is a distinguished economics scholar and founder of the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University. He received his BA (Honours) in economics in 1984 from the University of Victoria and his MA in economics from Queen’s University in 1985. He then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he completed his PhD in economics at M.I.T. in 1989.
