CIC Victoria: Canada-Japan Relations in a Changing Indo-Pacific Region

April 10 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm PDT

When: Wednesday, 10 April
Where: The Union Club, 805 Gordon Street
Time: 11:30 am – 1:30 pm (registration desk opens at 11:30 am)
Our Speaker: Japanese Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Yamanouchi Kanji

We are very pleased to announce that the Japanese Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Yamanouchi Kanji, will be here to speak about Canada-Japan relations and on Japan’s perspective on security in the Indo-Pacific.

Today, Canada-Japan relations are underpinned by close political, security, economic and cultural ties, which are bolstered by common values and shared interests. Indeed, as the Ambassador will discuss, both countries are strong allies in supporting the rules-based, multilateral system. In particular, Canada and Japan work closely within international organisations and multilateral forums, such as the UN, G7 and G20, to coordinate responses to numerous global challenges, such as Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Trade and economic relations have also been steadily expanding and both countries collaborated closely in the implementation and expansion of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Lastly, Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, released in November 2022, further highlights Canada’s commitment to strengthen ties with Japan, particularly in areas of security and defence. This will be a great opportunity to hear the Japanese view of our bilateral relationship and concerns that many have over the rise of China in the Indo-Pacific.

Our speaker, Ambassador Yamanouchi Kanji, joined the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1984. His main focus has been on US-Japan relations. Previous positions include: executive secretary to the deputy chief cabinet secretary and executive secretary to the prime minister, director of the Ministry’s First North American Division, and deputy director-general of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, minister at the Embassy of Japan in Washington DC, director-general of the Economic Affairs Bureau of the Ministry, one of the architects of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and Consul-General of Japan in New York from 2018-2022. In May 2022, he was appointed as Japan’s Ambassador to Canada. Ambassador Kanji will be joined by Mr. Kohei Maruyama, Consul-General of Japan in Vancouver and Mr. Suguru Hayashida, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan.

The cost to attend is $40 for CIC members, $45 for guests of CIC members, $50 for non-members, $30 for CIC young professional members and non-member students and $20 for CIC student members.
