CIC Victoria: Canada-India relations: Why have they gone so suddenly wrong?

December 5, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm PST
This is a CIC member only event.  Status: Currently full.
When: Tuesday, 5 December
Where: The Sticky Wicket Pub, Maple Room, the Strathcona Hotel, 919 Douglas Street
Time: 5 – 7:00 pm (doors open at 5 pm)

India figures prominently in Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy. In addition, more immigrants come to Canada from India each year than from anywhere else. Thus our diplomatic relations derive strength from robust people-to-people ties.
However, when our government alleged that India had a hand in the June 2023 assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver, there was a rapid downward spiral in bilateral relations. Nijjar was a Canadian Sikh separatist leader involved with the Khalistan movement which calls for an independent Sikh state.  Canada’s allegation led to a swift reaction by the Indian government with New Delhi giving Canada until October 10th to withdraw 41 diplomats, subsequently carried out.  With Canada-India relations at their lowest point in a long time, questions to explore are: how did we get here? And can the relationship be repaired?

To explore this issue we are delighted that Reeta Tremblay will speak at our next Politics in the Pub event.  Reeta is Professor Emerita of Comparative Politics and former Provost and Vice-President Academic at the University of Victoria. She is also Past President of the Canadian Political Science Association and Canadian Asian Studies. Her major areas of research are secessionist movements (Kashmir) in South Asia, the politics of subaltern resistance and accommodation in post-colonial societies, democracy and governance, and comparative federalism. She has authored or co-authored several books, articles, and reviews. Her work has been widely reviewed and cited. In particular, she is widely considered as the leading North American expert on Kashmir and India-Pakistan relations in that region. Two of her recent books are: Religion and Politics in Jammu and Kashmir (2020) and Modi’s Foreign Policy (2017).
