CIC Victoria: Canada-China Relations: Looking Ahead to 2019
January 28, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm PST

Description
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began 2018 by declaring it to be the year of Canada-China tourism, but since then relations between the two countries have rapidly cooled. Attempts to broaden trade ties brought little success and Canada-China relations received a major blow in early December 2018, when Meng Wanzhou, Chief Financial Officer of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei was arrested by Canadian authorities based on a US extradition request – an arrest that sent shockwaves through the global markets, already on edge over US-China trade tensions. Join us as Margaret Cornish and Jonathan Manthorpe look back at a tumultuous year in Canada-China relations and look forward to how the bilateral relationship will be shaped by global developments.
