CIC Victoria: Canada Alone: Navigating the Post-American World

November 28, 2023 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm PST

When: Tuesday, 28 November
Where: The Union Club, 805 Gordon Street
Time: 11:30-1:30 pm (doors open at 11:30 am)
Special Note: Susan Blades from Munro’s books will be at the lunch – the perfect time to pick-up a signed copy of Kim’s book!

This will be a not-to-be-missed lunch event with Professor Kim Nossal discussing his new book, Canada Alone: Navigating the Post-American World, which sketches a dystopian future where we are likely to see the illiberal, anti-democratic, and authoritarian “Make America Great Again” movement regain power and dominate American politics.
As Kim will argue, this will have profound foreign policy consequences: if a MAGA Republican — either Donald J. Trump himself or a Trumpian candidate — becomes president in 2025, the West will likely fracture under the stresses of a re-invigorated America First policy, the purposeful abandonment of American global leadership and increasing Chinese assertiveness coupled with Russian revanchism.
As Kim further argues, Canadians assume that the United States will always be there to provide global leadership for the West, but, with an increasingly dysfunctional Washington, we must be ready to navigate in what will be a deeply unfamiliar post-American world.
Kim Nossal is professor emeritus in the Department of Political Studies and a fellow in the Centre for International and Defence Policy at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. In 1976, he joined the Department of Political Science at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and taught there for twenty-five years, serving as chair of the Department from 1992 to 1996. In 2001 he went to Queen’s University as the head of the Department of Political Studies, a position he held until 2009. From 2011 to 2013, he was the director of the Centre for International and Defence Policy, and from 2013 to 2015, served as Chair of Policy Studies and the director of the Queen’s School of Policy Studies. He retired from Queen’s in 2020.  In 2019, Kim was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and he is a former editor of International Journal, the quarterly journal of the Canadian International Council.
