CIC Vancouver: Unleashing the Potential – A Dynamic Economic Partnership between Canada and Indonesia

September 13, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm PDT

The governments of Canada and Indonesia are currently engaged in negotiations to establish a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a strategic initiative designed to fortify economic collaboration between these two nations. This agreement holds the promise of significantly enhancing Canada’s economic landscape and fostering growth for Canadian enterprises, given Indonesia’s robust GDP of approximately $1.5 trillion and a population numbering more than 275 million people. Notably, Indonesia stands as the largest economy in Southeast Asia and currently holds the position of ASEAN’s chair.

Conversely, Indonesia places substantial emphasis on the Indonesia-Canada CEPA negotiations, viewing them as a pivotal priority to amplify market entry for goods, services, and investment within the North American region. The successful culmination of these negotiations will herald a significant milestone as it signifies Indonesia’s inaugural trade accord negotiation with a North American nation, underscoring the nation’s commitment to expanding its economic horizons.

This alignment with Indonesia holds paramount importance considering Canada’s recently launched Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS), aiming to fortify its presence within this region of escalating significance. It will also serve as a pivotal stride in fulfilling Canada’s trade diversification goals, especially in engaging with the rapidly expanding economies of Southeast Asia. This agreement would synergistically complement Canada’s ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was launched in November 2021.

In a synergistic venture alongside the Indonesian Consulate General in Vancouver, the CIC Vancouver is delighted to host an illuminating discourse on the dynamic economic relations existing between Canada and Indonesia. The event, titled “Unleashing the Potential: A Dynamic Economic Partnership between Canada and Indonesia,” endeavors to examine the multifaceted landscape of the Canada-Indonesia economic relationship. By delving into the nuanced opportunities and challenges that underscore this association, the event seeks to illuminate the ways in which both nations can collaboratively fortify their bilateral bonds, thereby cultivating a relationship of mutual benefit and shared progress.
