CIC Vancouver Island: Fixing the Canadian Economy: Assessing Mark Carney’s First 18 Months on the Job

Please join us on Thursday, October 8, when our CIC Vancouver Island branch will welcome Professor Chris Ragan – distinguished economics scholar and founder of the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University – to share his thoughts about the current state of Canada’s economy and the implications – large and small, West to East – of the escalating trade war initiated by President Donald Trump. This critical issue gains importance every day as we navigate an increasingly threatening relationship with our next-door neighbour and historically closest ally.
Professor Ragan will outline Prime Minister Mark Carney’s key trade policy responses – expanded defence spending; stimulus for business – including an ambitious national housing construction program and tax initiatives targeted at improving affordability. He will also speak about the hurdles these policies will face – both in Ottawa and in individual provinces which do not always speak with one voice on core national issues.
Following his presentation, Professor Ragan will welcome your questions.
Please purchase your tickets early and you are welcome to bring a guest.
Cost: Members $30 each | Guests $35 each.
- Complimentary refreshments and a light lunch will be served followed by our speaker. For special dietary requests email vancouverisland@thecic.org.
