CIC Toronto: What is the State of Canadian International Development?

February 22, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST

CIC_Toronto_logo

With a new government barely 3 months into their mandate, changes to how the government operates have already been apparent. Canadian International Development is emerging from a decade under the former government that had critics calling it anything from politicized to corporatized. Will the next decade under this new government be any different? How will Canadian agencies reclaim their place on the world stage? Will Canadian NGOs be able to be more effective moving forward?

The Canadian International Council – Toronto Branch has teamed up with Why Should I Care? for this discussion about the state of Canadian International Development. Luke Stocking, Central Ontario Animator for Development and Peace, Melissa Matlow, Legislative and Public Affairs Manager at World Animal Protection, and Nikki Whaites, Deputy Director of International Programs for War Child Canada, will be forming the panel.

Speakers’ Biographies
Luke Stocking is the Central Ontario Animator for Development and Peace. D&P has been the
international development agency of the Canadian Catholic Church since 1967. Its mission is to support partners in the Global South who promote alternatives to unfair social, political and economic structures, educate the Canadian population about the causes of poverty and mobilize them to act for change.

Melissa Matlow is the Legislative and Public Affairs Manager at World Animal Protection. For more than 50 years, World Animal Protection has been helping people protect their animals during natural disasters. World Animal Protection would like to see the importance of farm animals to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people adequately reflected in international humanitarian and development policies.

Nikki Whaites is Deputy Director of International Programs for War Child Canada. War Child’s mission is to work with war-affected communities to help children reclaim their childhood through access to education, opportunity and justice. War Child takes an active role in raising public awareness around the impact of war on communities and the shared responsibility to act.
