CIC Simcoe County: Commanding Hope in Action: Leveraging Climate Change Action Through Financial Institutional Reform (Online event)

May 11, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm EDT

Building on the recent writings of Thomas Homer Dixon, author of Commanding Hope: The Power We Have to Renew a World in Peril, this webinar will focus on the important role of financial institutions as strategic levers in addressing climate change in a meaningful and powerful way.

Patrick DeRochie is Pension Engagement Manager at Shift Action for Pension Wealth and Planet Health. Patrick has wide-ranging experience in policy, research, government relations, digital engagement, campaigning, organizing and stakeholder relations with environmental and labour organizations. At Shift, he is focused on building a network of pension beneficiaries in Canada to invest their retirement savings in a zero-carbon future.

Elana Sulakshana is an Energy finance Campaigner at Rainforest Action Network, where she leads RAN’s campaign to stop the U.S. insurance industry from driving the climate crisis. She has been active in the climate justice movement for the last eight years, most recently organizing for just and equitable climate policy in Washington State, fighting fracking in the U.K., and campaigning for universities to divest from fossil fuels and reinvest in communities.

Amelia Meister is a Senior Campaigner and Shareholder Activism Coordinator at SumOfUs. She is especially passionate about fighting climate chaos and supporting Indigenous-led struggle against ongoing corporate colonization. Her specialty is leveraging the power of individual and institutional investors to move major corporations towards a more environmentally and socially just world. Amelia has been instrumental in pushing the CPPIB to divest from US private prison corporations and using shareholder power to get major Canadian corporations like Saputo, TD and RBC to create more progressive climate policies. Amelia is a committed single mother and community leader in Guelph, ON.

Paul Berger is a climate change activist in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University, where he teaches climate change education. Paul supported the student group, Fossil Free Lakehead, in the eight year campaign that led to Lakehead University’s Board of Governors voting to divest the Lakehead endowment of fossil fuel stocks.

Scott Janzwood (Panel Moderator) is the Deputy Director of Research and Operations at the Cascade Institute. He leads the development and management of the Cascade Institute’s research projects. Scott’s own research focuses on how scientists and policymakers collaborate to address global catastrophic risks such as climate change, pandemics, and other emerging threats. He also studies strategies and tools that we can use to make better decisions under deep uncertainty.
