CIC Saskatoon: Uganda: Why Women, Children, and Goats Matter

January 24, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm CST

Description

Dr. Card, through her partnership experiences, has witnessed some very grim realities: the poorest people in the world live on less than a dollar a day; many of them are vulnerable women and orphans that live in sub-Saharan Africa; many women in Uganda have been widowed by HIV AIDS, and now carry the combined burden of being HIV positive, with taking care of orphans.

The empowerment of women is the future of Sub-Saharan Africa, and relies on education and changes they make themselves-along with infrastructural investments in potable water, schools, health centres, and in socio-political advocacy. Through her work – which includes microcredit and goats – Dr. Card has seen many success stories, some of which she will be sharing with us.

Speaker’s Biography

Dr. Claire Card is a full professor at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, where she teaches African Wildlife Conservation. She is the current President of the Saskatoon Chapter of Veterinarians without Borders (VWB-VSF), which is an NGO with partnerships throughout the world. She is the project director for an interdisciplinary development and capacity building program in Uganda whose beneficiaries are HIV-AIDS affected women and orphans. She currently Chairs the University of Saskatchewan’s Council and is the first women to hold this position.
