CIC NCB Ottawa: How Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Transformed Germany’s Foreign, Security and Energy Policy

The Europe Study Group (ESG) presents…
HOW RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE TRANSFORMED GERMANY’S FOREGIN, SECURITY AND ENERGY POLICY
27 February 2024, 5:30 pm EST
KPMG Headquarters, Suite 1800, 150 Elgin Street Ottawa, ON K2P 1L4
OVERVIEW
Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022 did not prove to be the swift takeover that Moscow had mistakenly expected. Among the many unintended consequences has been the transformation of the foreign, security and energy policy of one of Canada’s closest allies, Germany. This was signalled within days by German Chancellor Scholz.
On the anniversary of his unprecedented ‘Zeitenwende’ or ‘Turning Point’ speech on Feb. 27, 2022, we’ll explore what this means for Germany, for Ukraine, and for Canada.
Join our expert panel of diplomatic, academic and business leaders, as well as an audience of young professionals from across government agencies and departments, Canadian and foreign diplomats, CIC members, students, and interested others.
SPEAKERS
Karina Häuslmeier, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy Ottawa
Isabelle Poupart, Director General, European Affairs, Global Affairs Canada
Dr. Achim Hurrelmann, Co-Director of Carleton’s Centre for European Studies
This event will be moderated by George S. Takach, former former partner and National Technology Industry Leader at the McCarthy Tétrault law firm.
