HAITI: WHAT’S NEXT IN 2024? / HAÏTI: PERSPECTIVES POUR 2024?
7 February 2024, 12:00 pm EST (virtual & open to the public!)
OVERVIEW
Despite the approval of important resolutions by the UN Security Council in October 2023, the situation in Haiti remains bleak. Are the reinforcement of the National Police and its efforts to counter gang violence improving security on the ground? What can we expect from the deployment of the Multilateral Security Support Mission mandated by the UN security council? What impact are the UN-mandated sanctions against gang leaders and personalities accused of collusion with them having in Haiti? What is the status of dialogue between the de facto government and the opposition? What are the prospects for a transition agreement leading to the election of a legitimate government?
This discussion will focus on the four pillars of the current international strategy for Haiti: i) deploying the Multilateral Security Support Mission; ii) implementing direct assistance to the National Police; iii) applying the UN’s sanctions regime; and iv) encouraging political dialogue in Haiti.
