OVERVIEW

The women in African History roundtable event during the 2024 Black History Month serves as a vital platform to celebrate and recognize the remarkable contributions of Black women in Canada. This ASG event will highlight a panel of women who will speak to the role of Black women in Africa and in Canada. They will address historical achievements, shedding light on their resilience, leadership, and ongoing impact in various fields, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse narratives within Black history.

 

SPEAKERS

Pascasie Minani Passy: The author of multiple books on African women, Passey is a part-time professor and doctoral student. Her latest book explores activism of Black African women during the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial periods.

Rose Ndengue: As Assistant Professor at Glendon, York University, Ndengue is a historian socio-politician who defines herself as a black feminist from the transatlantic space, stradding Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Yvette Yende-Ashiri: A former candidate in the Ottawa municipal elections for Ward 19 (Cumberland/Orléans-Sud-Navan), Yende-Ashiri is honorary vice-president of Association communauté congolaise du Canada Ottawa-Gatineau.

Namwezi M’Bayoya: A life coach and speaker originally from the DRC, Namwezi has worked for over 15 years helping people and families made vulnerable by war, in the villages where she lived.

 

This event will be moderated by Patricia Kumbakisaka, External & Embassy Liason Coordinator for the Africa Study Group.
