CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Virtual event – Japan’s Reaction to Shifting Geopolitical Tides

June 26, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm EDT
Gratuit

The CIC National Capital’s Asia-Pacific Study Group will be holding its first virtual session. It will feature Jonathan Berkshire Miller on the challenges faced by Abe’s Japan amid the pandemic.

Abstract:
This discussion will look at how the administration of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been reacting to a shifting geopolitical landscape including a marked uptick in tensions between the US and China and growing challenges to supply chain security amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. How has the pandemic impacted Japan’s foreign policy and security strategy? Where will relations with key neighbours, such as China, Korea and Russia be headed in the coming months? The discussion will also look at what potentially could come after Shinzo Abe’s tenure and its impact on Tokyo’s foreign policy.

Speaker:
Jonathan Berkshire Miller is an international affairs professional with expertise on security, defense and intelligence issues in Northeast Asia. He has held a variety of positions in the private and public sector. Currently, he is a senior fellow with the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) based in Tokyo, Japan. Miller is also deputy director and senior fellow on foreign policy issues at the Ottawa-based Macdonald Laurier Institute, a Distinguished Fellow with the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada, and Senior Fellow on East Asia for the Tokyo-based Asian Forum Japan and the New York-based EastWest Institute.
