CIC National Capital (Ottawa): U.S. Election Discussion with Official Republican and Democratic Representatives (Webinar)

September 30, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm EDT
Gratuit

The CIC-NCB’S North America Study Group is pleased to host a virtual event with official representatives nominated by the external branches of the two main U.S. political parties, the Republicans Overseas and Democrats Abroad.

The United States election on November 3, 2020 will be one of the most consequential in the country’s history, with domestic, bilateral, trilateral, and global implications. To learn more about positions and candidates, the North America Study Group of the Canadian International Council’s National Capital Branch has “gone to the source” and approached the external wings of the two main political parties, the Republicans Overseas and Democrats Abroad, to nominate official speakers. We look forward to a stimulating evening of constructive dialogue to help shed light on where the respective parties are promising to take America and what this might mean for Canada and the world.

Speakers:

John Richardson will represent Republicans Overseas. He is a Toronto-based lawyer whose practice assists U.S. citizens and Green Card holders living outside the United States. His commitment to the democratic process has involved moderating political debates and running as an independent candidate. He has worked extensively with Republicans Overseas, including making presentations all over the world.

Larry Rousseau will represent Democrats Abroad. He was elected as the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Executive Vice-President at the CLC’s 28th Constitutional Convention in May 2017. He has a long history of trade union and political activism, particular on issues such as labour relations, and has been involved with Democrats Abroad Canada for many years.

Jon Allen will moderate the discussion. He is a Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto and Distinguished Fellow of the CIC. Formerly a career diplomat, among his positions he was an Ambassador of Canada to Israel and to Spain and served as Minister (Political) at the Embassy of Canada to the United States.

David MacDuff, the founding chair of the North America Study Group, will open the session.

All attendees, with the exclusion of the panelists, will take part in their personal capacity alone regardless of professional or other affiliations.
