CIC National Capital (Ottawa): The Middle East: Challenges and Opportunities, Confrontations and Transformations

This first event of 2019 of the CIC National Capital Branch’s Middle East Study Group will feature Mr. Troy Lulashnyk, Director General at Global Affair Canada of Israel, West Bank and Gaza, Egypt and Maghreb.
The Middle East continues to be a region replete with challenges and opportunities, confrontations and transformations. This event will examine some of the current political, economic, and social issues in the region. It will discuss some of the underlying causes and what are possible prescriptions for the future. it will also underline Canada’s significant engagement and ongoing efforts to make positive contributions to international security and stability and to the lives of people in very practical ways.
Speaker’s Biography
H.E. Troy Lulashnyk, (BA [Political Science], University of Winnipeg, 1992; MA [Political Studies], University of Manitoba, 1995) is currently the Director General at Global Affair Canada of Israel, West Bank and Gaza, Egypt and Maghreb. He served as Canada’s Ambassador to Egypt from 2014-17 where he managed a complex security environment and addressed a number of important consular and trade issues. Prior to this position, he served as Canada’s Ambassador to Ukraine from 2011-2014 where he supported strongly the bilateral relationship and the aspirations of the Ukrainian people for democracy and freedom. Previously, he was Director General of the Non-Proliferation and Security Threat Reduction Bureau at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, responsible for international security programming related to threat reduction, counter terrorism and combatting international criminal activity (2006-2011). In his capacity as Director of the Global Partnership Program, he helped manage the cold war legacy of weapons and materials of mass destruction and related expertise in the former Soviet Union (2002-2006). Mr. Lulashnyk was a Senior Policy Advisor on international security (1999-2002) and a Non-Proliferation Officer (1996-1999).
