CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Politics at the Pub – Misinformation, Digital Division & Democratic Consequences (In-person event!)
December 13, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST
$10 à $20
iaWelcome the holiday season with the CIC National Capital Branch’s recommencement of Politics at the Pub – live event!
We are connected more than ever before and experience an ever-changing and interconnected network of global issues. Climate change, pandemics and polarization are just some of the many global issues nations around the world will have to address in the near future. In combating these problems, Canada and countries alike face an unseen yet threatening peril—misinformation. The widespread use of social media and integral aspects of technology in our daily lives has allowed global citizens to have a vast amount of information at their fingertips. However, not all of this information is sincere. As we have witnessed in the past few years, there is not yet consensus on how to improve responses to misinformation.
To help us better understand the complex and problematic nature of misinformation in the digital era, we will be joined by: Kevin Chan, Global Senior Director and Head of Public Policy, Canada at Meta Platforms (Facebook); Sarah Stinson, Privy Council Office’s Director of Operations for the Protecting Democracy Initiative; Pierre-Marc Perreault, Acting Director of Heritage Canada’s Digital Citizen Initiative; Chris Beall, Policy Lead at Centre for International Governance Innovation.
In moderating this prominent discussion, Stephanie Carvin will guide the conversation from her knowledge and expertise on technology and cyber issues, international law, and foreign policy.
Please note that this event will take place under the Chatham House Rule.
