CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Politics at the Pub: Chrystia Freeland’s Foreign Policy Address: One Year Later

June 18, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Description

On June 6, 2017, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland rose in the House of Commons to deliver a speech on Canada’s foreign policy priorities. She began with a striking question: Is Canada an essential country? Over the course of her address, the Minister presented a case for the “rules-based international order,” examined the continuing importance of the United States, and considered Canada’s place in the world at large. It seemed clear that the Minister was outlining a foreign policy outlook for the Trudeau government.

On June 18, 2018, Politics at the Pub will return to the subject of this speech. We will examine the foreign policy outlook of the Trudeau government over the past year, and hold its conduct up to the text of Chrystia Freeland’s foreign policy address. How effectively has the government pursued its priorities? What has the government done to uphold a “rules-based international order”? Does the United States remain an “indispensable nation” for Canada?

We welcome you to join us in this exciting panel discussion on Canada’s foreign policy.

Paul H. Chapin, Executive Editor, The Vimy Report
