CIC Edmonton: The Future of Canada-U.S. Trade

September 17, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm MDT

The Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), often referred to as the NEW NAFTA, came into force on July 1st after three years of often contentious negotiations. Though the agreement is in place, there is still uncertainty moving forward for Canada: with the United States placing tariffs on aluminum and steel imports coming from Canada,  and Ottawa retaliating, will this new deal provide the certainty and stability has originally hoped? With changes affecting key Canadian sectors, such as dairy, will this agreement ultimately be to the benefit of the Canadian economy or a loss? Will it impair Canada’s trading relationships elsewhere?
