CIC Calgary: Changing Strategic Nature of the Arctic – Back to the Cold War
March 23, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm MDTGratuit
In 2019, U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo identified Russia and China as posing direct Arctic threats, and chastised Canada for its claim on the Northwest Passage. His identification of the Arctic region as a new zone of strategic competition challenges the prevailing understanding that since the end of the Cold War, the arctic had become a region of “exceptional” peace and cooperation.
Featuring Dr. Rob Huebert, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Calgary, this event will analyze key questions: What is the new arctic maritime security environment that is now developing? Why is competition and conflict now overtaking cooperation? What does this mean for Canada? Canada has been one of the leading advocates of a peaceful and cooperative Arctic, but is also a member of both NATO and NORAD, so how will Canada navigate this increasingly complex environment?
A moderated audience Q&A period will follow the presentation.
